Stories of Change

Behind every number is a story.

These are the voices of non-Chinese youth, schools, and communities who have taken part in our programmes. Each story shows how awareness, skills, and support can grow into lasting change.

Building Confidence Through Peer Support
  • The Background
Many students want to support their friends but aren’t sure where to start. They often join our workshops with little prior knowledge of mental health, and as one participant noted, “how little many of us know about mental health resources or where to seek help”. Our programs are designed to fill this gap, teaching teens “how we as teens can help our fellow peers through peer support”.

  • Role-plays, group discussions, and case presentations
  • Storytelling sessions that helped participants become better “active listeners”
  • Practical skill-building, like learning “active listening and open questions to be a more effective and supportive peer supporter”

The format ensures “not a single voice went unheard” , allowing everyone to share their unique ideas and opinions.

  • The Change
The result is a transformative learning experience. Participants leave with the tools and the confidence to act. They report gaining “a deeper understanding of what peer support can do for my friends” and finally learning “how to support my friends and family when they face challenges”.

This “boosted my confidence” and “built our confidence”, equipping students with the invaluable knowledge of mental health advocacy and the skills required to become a peer mental health advocate in my community.

“Before, I didn’t know how to help a friend under pressure. Now I can listen and encourage them to get help.”

Training Youth Ambassadors to Lead Change
  • The Background
Our Train-the-Trainer Summer School brought together 30+ non-Chinese youth leaders to learn facilitation, advocacy, and peer support.

  • The Change
Graduates are now applying their skills back in schools and communities — leading peer discussions, advocating for mental health awareness, and even considering future studies in social sciences.

“Speaking up in sessions boosted my confidence. I can now lead small group discussions and make sure everyone’s voice is heard.”

Partnering with Schools and Teachers
  • The Background
Partner schools invited us to deliver workshops tailored for non-Chinese students. Teachers played an active role in co-designing sessions.

  • The Change
Teachers observed more openness in class discussions and greater empathy among students from different backgrounds. The programme also equipped schools with practical ideas for embedding mental health support.

“After the workshop, I noticed my students becoming more open in class discussions. They showed greater empathy and respect towards peers from different backgrounds.”
