Training Phase and Practicum Milestones Achieved
The Train-the-Trainer Programme Batch 2 under the Jockey Club Shining Together with Cross-Cultural Youth Project has successfully completed its structured training phase and peer support practicum, marking an important milestone in empowering non-Chinese youth to promote mental wellbeing within their communities.
Designed to strengthen mental health literacy, reduce stigma and cultivate sustainable peer support networks, the programme places youth leadership at the centre of community change. Through a carefully sequenced six-session curriculum, participants progressed from foundational learning to applied leadership practice.
The training began with core concepts of mental health and wellbeing, including understanding common conditions, recognising early signs of emotional distress and addressing misconceptions within non-Chinese communities. Participants then developed structured peer support competencies, covering supportive communication, active listening, ethical boundaries and appropriate referral pathways. Cultural responsiveness was embedded throughout to ensure safe and responsible engagement.
In the later phase, participants undertook supervised peer support practicum cases and engaged in reflective learning. They also designed their own advisory and mental health promotion initiatives tailored to the needs of their communities. This experiential approach ensured that participants were equipped not only with knowledge, but with the confidence and practical competence to lead.
